Your Digital Detox and Cultural Connection at Etaambura

Our world is increasingly “connected”, as the Internet dominates our lives. Whether sending work emails, attending online meetings, or watching funny videos, our devices consume nearly every waking moment. Like a power outlet that can only take one plug at a time, however, our online-connected brains are struggling to maintain real-world connections.

While being connected can be useful at work, when you finally take that well-earned vacation, you need to give your brain a break. Even medical doctors are recommending a “digital detox” to break screen addiction and improve your overall well-being. But it can be hard to stay away from your devices when the WiFi is on and you’re feeling a little bored…

Here’s our solution to your digital dilemma: Visit Etaambura!

Not only will you be offline, you will have the opportunity to meet Ovahimba people who still live traditional, entirely offline lives. During your stay with us, you can disconnect from the world of artificial intelligence and reconnect to the earth, sun and real people who have meaningful stories to tell.

Here are our top tips for digital detox and cultural connection when you visit Etaambura Lodge.

Embrace the journey and the destination

Your digital detox starts even before you get to Etaambura. This remote location is best visited as part of a longer tour of the spectacular Kunene Region. Whether you choose to come on one of our multi-day, bespoke expeditions, or drive yourself, you will want Etaambura on the itinerary.

The drive to Etaambura will get you out of the online world and onto the gravel roads that wind their way through majestic mountains and famous river valleys. With almost no traffic, the freedom of the open road will be the first balm to your over-connected soul.

As you approach Etaambura after your day (or days) of exploration and wonder, you will see a small signboard pointing to a road that goes up. And up. And up. The lodge is perched on a mountaintop, so getting there requires a good 4×4 and healthy sense of adventure.

Etaambura is part of your journey away from the hustle and into peace.

Go offline on the mountaintop

Etaambura Lodge is made from local rocks and other natural materials, thus melting into the background as you gaze in wonder at the natural beauty that surrounds you on every side. If you are tired of seeing the world through a flat screen and wondering whether an image or video is real or not, Etaambura will bring you gratefully back to the real, 3D-world.

There is no WiFi at Etaambura. When you tell your colleagues that you will be unavailable during your holiday, this time you really mean it! The lack of WiFi allows you to completely unplug from the online madness and regain your sanity and grounding.

Each twin bed chalet at Etaambura has a unique view of the mountains and is set apart from the others around the rocky outcrop. The soundtrack to your blissful reverie includes mountain breezes and birdsong.

Get lost in a book, or spend quality time with family and friends

While the lodge sports a modest library, including two excellent books written by Garth Owen-Smith (Arid Eden) and Dr Margaret Jacobsohn (Life is like a Kudu Horn) on life and conservation in the Kunene Region, we recommend bringing your to-be-read pile. Etaambura is the perfect place to get lost in a good book!

If you are looking to reconnect with family or friends, then look no further. Perhaps the kids are spending worrying amounts of time on their devices – Etaambura is a place where they can get away from their screens and re-engage with the real world.

Travelling with a group of friends in two or more vehicles is perhaps one of the best ways to see the Kunene Region, and your nights at Etaambura will be a highlight of the trip. You can opt to cook your own food or have meals provided – either way, this will be an event that no one will forget.

Visit the local watering hole

We mean “watering hole” in the literal sense – a place where people bring their livestock to drink and fill up their own buckets for household use. The watering holes in the Kunene are hand-dug wells in dry riverbeds that reach down to the water table.

Men climb down into the hole with a bucket and haul water out to the top, while women and children fill the water trough and control the thirsty livestock with amazing skill. Witnessing the teamwork and effort required for a simple drink of water puts our modern conveniences and easy lifestyles into perspective.

Our guides at Etaambura have family ties with the people living in the village near the lodge, which means that your interactions with the Ovahimba will be authentic and respectful. You can also opt to visit a traditional village, local school or church to gain further insights into daily Ovahimba life.

Share a meal with the Ovahimba

For the ultimate cultural connection, we recommend organising a traditional meal with Ovahimba people at Etaambura Lodge. They will join your group for a dinner of goat meat and mielie pap (maize meal). During this time, you can ask and answer questions about culture and daily life in a two-way conversation mediated by your bilingual guide.

What is it that you find most fascinating and curious about the things you saw while at the village? What do Ovahimba people want to know about your culture and lifestyle? What ideas and perspectives do your cultures have in common? There are more than you think!

Having face-to-face conversations with people from a totally different cultural background is sure to open your mind and give you a new perspective on life. While it takes minutes to forget the last thing you saw on your screen, this experience will stay with you for years to come.
